Dave, our son, said he
would leave Eastgate about 12:30 and meet us at the festival. We left Delhi at
12:30 and drove out River Road and turned onto 128 along the Big Miami river. I
hadn’t driven here since last summer and the fields were now coming to life. The
corn stood 18 inches tall and the soccer fields just outside of Miamitown were
nice and green. We turned towards Oxford on US 27 and in 10 minutes came to the
end of the road and turned right. In a minute or two we saw the rides for the
festival.
The cell phone rang as we
pulled into our parking spot. They were a minute behind us and soon we saw their
blue car pulling into the lot. I think that Angie is slowly showing her
influence and our boy is starting to get places on time (it’s something we never
could pull off.) Luke, our one and only grandson, was asleep. He was placed in
the stroller and slept throughout the meal. He’s a resilient little guy; his dad
took him to the Red’s game to meet up with his buddies Friday night -- Luke
didn’t squawk once.
There were not many large trees in the parking area, but there were lots of cicadas flying around. Each of us had to brush some off our clothing. Just when I was paying for the tickets, I saw that three cicadas were sitting on Dave. We didn’t want to bring any into the dining area and shoed them away.
We paid our money ($8) and picked up our desserts (lemon, coconut cream and cherry pies.) We were seated quickly and the food arrived after a little while. There weren’t a lot of selections as there are later in the year when fresh vegetables start to arrive. The chicken was very good, cooked just right and was hot and moist. The slaw had a red color and there was only a small amount in a very large container. I bet someone didn’t order enough cabbage or messed up a batch or two when mixing it.
A couple came by wearing chicken suits. They gladly posed so that I could take their picture. Luke was still napping and Dad placed a plate of chicken bones on his belly for me to take another picture. Everyone liked his or her desert and Edith loved the coconut cream pie – she didn’t share!
The weather was nice and we
walked around the rides and games. Dave won $3 on the Big Six wheel. He’s going
to Las Vegas next week for Dan Driehaus’ bachelor party – Angie said that he got
a book on how to win at Blackjack from eBay. We heard some Sinatra songs and saw two
middle-age men, one a singer and the other on keyboard. Each showed a lot of
feeling as they performed. There were a few persons dancing – kind of nice.
John called in the evening when I was typing this up. He took a drive today to his favorite area in southwestern Wisconsin and went fishing with Beth (she got a license this year.) We will be seeing him an a few weeks and do our own fishing at Lake Redstone. He said that we’ll be going to meet Beth’s parents at a Wisconsin fish fry – it’s served “family style” and you get more that you can eat. So much food, so little time.
