We left Rifle this morning
heading North on I-70. The freeway follows the Colorado River. It passes through
the Glenwood Canyon near Glenwood Springs and the space between the mountains
really narrows. It’s amazing how the engineers could craft a high-speed
interstate highway under these conditions. At times, the Westbound lanes are
cantilevered above the Eastbound. As it approaches the Continental Divide, it
passes through the Eisenhower Tunnel, carved through a large, granite mountain.
Vail is located next to the freeway. Edith had read about the Betty Ford Garden and planned to stop (a ploy). Our average age was higher than that of any other couple and our average income was lower than any other couple. But we showed them a thing or two. We trudged back to the car with our hands full of packages. (If this keeps up, I may never completely retire). The back seat is full, but I can still see out the back window, at least for now.
Once through the tunnel, we headed North and stayed the night at Winter Park at Gasthaus Einheim, a German-themed hotel. Es var sehr schoen.
